Great Backyard Bird Count

February 20, 2017

The annual Great Backyard Bird Count will be held at Silver Springs State Park on Monday, February 20th. Bird walks will take place at both the State Road 40 and the State Road 35 sides of the Park. This is a great opportunity to participate in citizen science at it best.  Some binoculars will be available for your use; please bring your own  if possible.

The first guided bird walk will be held at the Camping & Museum Entrance of the Park on SR 35 and be led by Barb Gay of the Villagers Birders Club. Please meet at the Ranger Station at 8am. For this walk good walking shoes, hats, sunglasses and bug spray will be helpful.

There will be two guided bird walks at the Main Entrance on State Road 40; 10 am and 1 pm led by Carolyn Retey of Marion Audubon.  Also at the Main Entrance side of the Park there will be an information table and spontaneous bird walks lasting 15-20 minutes. Audubon members and Park Rangers will be on hand to lead walks and provide information on listing/recording results

This count can also be done by sitting in one location for 15 or more minutes and counting what you see. Perfect for those with mobility issues. Members of the Friends of Silver Springs State Park River Patrol will be counting birds from kayaks on the Silver River. Participants can join them in their own kayak or canoe or rent vessels at the park.
